Private Preparation

Preparing for Your First Divorce Consultation

This checklist is for enquiries about civil non-Muslim divorce in Malaysia. Read it freely and prepare only what you can safely access.

1. Choose a safe contact method

Decide which telephone number or email address the firm may use and whether messages may be left. Tell us if an inbox or device is shared. You do not need to subscribe or request an emailed copy to use this page.

2. Write a short timeline

  • Note the marriage date and place, current living arrangements and any separation date.
  • List significant events in date order, using brief factual notes.
  • Identify discussions or agreements already reached and points still in dispute.

3. Identify documents for later review

  • Locate your identification and marriage certificate.
  • Note any existing court papers, orders, separation agreements or correspondence from lawyers.
  • Record when papers were received and any stated hearing or response dates.

4. Consider the children’s arrangements

  • List the children’s ages, schooling and current care arrangements.
  • Note regular expenses, health or care needs and arrangements for contact with each parent.
  • Write down the practical questions you want to discuss.

5. Outline the financial position

  • List known income, household expenses, assets, loans and other commitments.
  • Identify property or business interests that may need discussion.
  • Distinguish figures supported by records from estimates or information you do not have.

Use information you lawfully hold or can access. Do not enter another person’s accounts or take documents you are not entitled to obtain.

6. Prepare your questions

Ask about the issues to address, possible processes, documents needed and how an engagement would be structured. Note immediate concerns about children, finances or personal safety. You do not need a complete file before making an enquiry.

7. Send only an initial outline

Give the parties’ names, a brief description, a safe contact method and any deadline. Sending an enquiry does not create a solicitor–client relationship. Do not send confidential documents until we complete a conflict check and confirm we can act.

This checklist is general information, not legal advice. If useful, request an emailed copy only through an address you can use safely; that request does not subscribe you to a newsletter.
